Virtualisation

Windows Server 2022 Standard includes Hyper-V, allowing compatible hardware to host virtual machines.

Under Microsoft’s core-based licensing model, Standard edition provides rights for up to two Windows Server operating system environments (OSEs) or Hyper-V isolated containers when all physical cores on the server are correctly licensed, subject to Microsoft’s applicable licensing terms.

If the physical server contains more than 16 cores, additional core licences may be required to fully license the server.

Additional licensing may also be required if you want to run more Windows Server virtual machines than the included Standard edition virtualisation rights permit.

For organisations requiring extensive virtualisation, software-defined networking, Storage Spaces Direct, or unlimited Windows Server virtualisation rights on a fully licensed host, Windows Server 2022 Datacenter may be more appropriate.
